Semiconductor stocks pushed higher ahead of Nvidia's earnings due later Wednesday after the U.S. market close, although investors remained wary of heightened expectations around artificial intelligence (AI) demand and forward guidance.

Industry heavyweights like Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) rebounded on Wednesday, while Intel (INTC) added to its Tuesday's gains. On the other hand, better-than-expected second-quarter (Q2) print did little to reverse sentiment in Analog Devices stock, which declined sharply.

Traders largely looked past concerns about a potential supply shock stemming from rising geopolitical tensions around Taiwan and ongoing capacity constraints at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM).

The Macro Overlay: What NDX Futures and CFTC Data are Signaling

To understand the broader implications of tonight's NVIDIA print, we must zoom out and look at institutional positioning in the broader market. The latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report from the CFTC provides a stark, sobering backdrop for Nasdaq 100 (NDX) futures.

In a massive structural shift, large speculators and hedge funds have aggressively flipped net-short on NDX futures, dumping 17.2K contracts in a single week to sit at a net-negative position of -16K contracts. This marks a complete unwinding of the multi-month bullish consensus seen in late March when net-longs hovered above +24K.

What does this institutional pivot tell us? It suggests that smart money has been actively de-risking and buying protection against their mega-cap tech portfolios. Asset managers and leveraged funds are aware of the sector's stretched valuations and are heavily hedged against a broader tech correction. They are likely using NDX futures to build a defensive moat ahead of potential volatility.

What Can Market Participants Expect?

If one thing is clear, the convergence of cautious semiconductor price action of late and a heavily short-positioned Nasdaq futures market tells a clear story: the market is braced for impact.

If NVIDIA misses the mark or offers conservative guidance, the pre-existing short positions on NDX futures could act as an accelerant, triggering a deeper tech-wide pullback.

Conversely, if NVIDIA delivers an absolute masterclass of an earnings report, it could trigger a ferocious contrarian short-squeeze, forcing hedge funds to rapidly cover their NDX shorts and fueling an explosive rally.

Either way, the smart money has chosen its side; ensuring proper risk management is paramount before the AI giant speaks.

Technical Analysis - NDX Futures

NDX Chart

Price action over the last several days has formed a prominent contracting pattern (indicated by the thick black trendline).

Price recently broke out above the descending resistance line but is currently fighting a confluence of technical resistance.

Price is currently tightly wedged between major Simple Moving Averages (MAs). The 200 MA (black) at 29,213.48 and the 100 MA (purple) at 29,205.21 are forming a strong horizontal ceiling.

The 50 MA (yellow) at 29,013.26 is acting as immediate dynamic support just below the current price.

A clean hourly close above the 29,215 level (clearing both the 100 and 200 MAs) would confirm a bullish breakout from the triangle pattern. This could open the doors for a rally back toward the recent swing highs near 29,500 and 29,750.

If the overhead 200 MA holds as rejection resistance, look for a retest of the 50 MA near 29,013. A break below 29,000 invalidates the immediate breakout attempt and likely sends price back down to test the swing low around 28,800 and beyond.
