U.S. stock index futures traded motly lower early Tuesday as Wall Street reopens after the Labor Day holiday, with investors weighing sticky Treasury yields, firm crude prices and a light macro calendar ahead of key inflation data and the European Central Bank rate decision later this week.

The tone follows Friday's pullback, when stocks retreated and yields jumped after August jobs growth rose 162,000 and July's went from negative to positive, with the unemployment rate at 4.1% . The hot print reinforced hawkish Fed bets, with fed funds futures traders now pricing in a 60% chance of a hike, up from 44.4% a month earlier , according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Rates remain the swing factor. Treasury yields rose following the report, with the 2-year yield hitting its highest level since January 2025. Traders will watch whether the 10-year yield can hold below the psychologically important 4.80% mark.

MarketFramework's Positioning Edge tool points to an extreme bearish divergence in the NQ contract, with profitable traders significantly more short than unprofitable traders. At 6:05, profitable traders were 39.3% long versus 58.7% long among unprofitable traders, leaving profitable traders 19 percentage points more short. This suggests traders on the winning side are positioned more defensively as NQ trades near 29,592.

The divergence is reinforced by the average trade data: profitable traders are holding an average 39% short position, compared with 59% long among unprofitable traders. Profitable trades are also averaging +$1.3K, while unprofitable trades average -$1.1K, making the positioning signal potentially constructive from a contrarian perspective if NQ stabilizes or rebounds.

US Stocks in Focus

Quantum computing company IonQ is trading higher as investors anticipate the company's Investor Day on September 8, 2026, where leadership is expected to provide key strategic updates, supported by reports of institutional share purchases by firms including UBS and Man Group, as well as continued positive sentiment following record second-quarter revenue growth and the successful integration of the SkyWater Technologies acquisition .

Bloom Energy shares are rising as the company is set to join the S&P 500 Index in the upcoming quarterly rebalancing that is due on Sept. 21.

Convenience-store operator Casey's General Stores (CASY) is expected to report earnings after the bell, giving investors a fresh read on U.S. consumer spending.

Asian Markets

Asia-Pacific benchmarks declined on Tuesday, with Japan pausing after a record-setting run. The Nikkei 225 slipped 1.70% to around 65,269.33 a day after the index climbed 2.12% to close at 66,400 while the broader Topix slumped 1.83%. The domestic markets prepared for an expected Bank of Japan rate hike, supported by strong economic data showing July wages rose at their fastest pace since 1997 and second-quarter GDP growth was revised higher .

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index fell about 0.38% to close near 25,317.18, weighed by profit-taking in tech and property names, while mainland China's Shanghai Composite ended modestly higher at 3,940.55.

South Korea's Kospi and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 traded in tight ranges after Monday's strong regional rally, ending down 0.58% and 1%, respectively, on Tuesday.

European Early Trend

European stocks opened cautiously in the red on Tuesday, with both the STOXX 50 and STOXX 600 trading modestly lower by the mid-session as investors continued to monitor developments in the Middle East and the political situation in Germany, after the far-right AfD secured a historic victory in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, a setback for Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Oil prices moved higher amid renewed strikes involving the U.S. and Iran, and investors look ahead to the ECB's monetary policy decision this week, with the central bank widely expected to raise borrowing costs .

Technical Levels to Watch

  • S&P 500 futures: immediate support seen near 7,690 (Friday's low zone); resistance at the 7,750–7,800 congestion band before the record high area.
  • Nasdaq 100 futures: 26,200 is the near-term pivot; a break above 26,600 opens room toward 27,000.
  • US 10-year yield: 4.80% is the key ceiling — a sustained close above would echo the January 2025 highs and pressure duration-sensitive equities.
  • WTI crude: $90 acts as psychological support; upside eyed at $94 amid Middle East risk premium.

Macro Data Preview

Tuesday's US economic calendar is light, giving traders room to reposition after the long weekend. Focus shifts quickly to mid-week catalysts: September 10 brings the ECB rate decision, August PPI, August core PPI, August existing home sales, and expected earnings from Oracle (ORCL), Macy's (M) and Adobe (ADBE) . The August CPI report later in the week is expected to be the pivotal input for the Fed's September policy path, following the hotter-than-expected August payrolls print.
