US Stock Futures Edge Lower as Traders Brace for Nvidia, Jackson Hole; Asia Tech Sells Off

U.S. stock futures pointed to a softer New York open on Monday as investors turned defensive ahead of a data- and event-heavy week headlined by Nvidia earnings, the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium and fresh inflation prints.

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged into the red, while those on the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.19% and 0.58%, respectively, after the major indexes posted weekly declines. The Trump administration is also expected to announce the details of new economic sanctions against Iran , keeping energy and geopolitical risk in focus.

The backdrop remains challenging for risk assets. Brent above $93 and a 4.71% US 10-year yield keep the regional discount-rate backdrop tight. Traders are watching whether Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's expanded buyback program can cap yields after last week's disorderly move higher.

NQ positioning points to an extreme bearish divergence, with profitable traders holding just 43.5% long exposure versus 58.1% for unprofitable traders, according to MarketFramework's Positioning Edge tool. In other words, profitable traders are significantly more short, while losing traders remain heavily positioned long. This suggests the better-performing group is leaning into downside risk rather than chasing the recent price action.

With NQ at 29,208, the contract is trading between the profitable traders’ average long entry of 29,189 and unprofitable traders’ average short entry of 29,249. The positioning gap, combined with profitable traders averaging a +$1.2K trade versus a -$1K average for unprofitable traders, reinforces a bearish signal: the traders currently positioned for downside have been on the right side of the market.

US stocks in focus

Nvidia is trading at $215.12 in premarket, up 0.19% from the previous close of $216.85 , as positioning builds into the AI bellwether's fiscal Q2 report on Wednesday after the close. The chipmaker is reported to be making a $7 billion 'Poolside' AI investment ahead of earnings, while soaring memory costs are pushing AI server prices up more than 15%.

Semiconductor stocks were broadly lower in premarket, with Intel (INTC), Marvell Tech (MRVL), Micron (MU), AMD (AMD), Broadcom (AVGO), all lower.

Boston Beer Co. (SAM) fell nearly 30% in premarket trading, adding to the losses experienced Friday, as traders reacted to an announcement from the company regarding the departure of its CFO.

Asia: Samsung, Alibaba drag tech lower

Asian shares ended mostly lower, at the outset of a week capped by a meeting of top U.S. economic officials at Jackson Hole. MSCI's Asia Pacific equities gauge slipped 1.15%, with tech shares leading the losses. The Kospi Index — a bellwether for AI investments — fell 3.12%, with Samsung Electronics slumping 8.70% after announcing plans to return as much as 110 trillion won ($80 billion) to investors this year.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.74% to 65,528.09, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong declined 1.89% to 25,517.33 and the Shanghai Composite index gave up 0.59% to 3,882.01. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.49% to 9,103.10, bucking the regional trend. Taiwan's Taiex fell 0.5%. In Hong Kong, Alibaba's HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion)placement was priced at HK$112.70, an 8.4% discount to Friday's close , deepening the tech selloff.

Europe: cautious start after weekly decline

European equities opened on a subdued footing and traded narrowly mixed, following a weekly decline, reflecting persistent geopolitical uncertainty, elevated bond yields and concerns over the outlook for monetary policy . Oil prices also remained elevated as the US prepares sweeping new economic sanctions against Iran, keeping inflation risks in focus. The Stoxx 600, DAX and CAC 40 have spent August close to record territory, but bond-market strain and the Asia tech drawdown are testing that resilience.

Macro data and event preview

The Monday session is light on catalyst, with no major earnings or data expected.

Tuesday brings August Consumer Confidence, July new home sales, and earnings from Bank of Montreal, Dick's Sporting Goods, Intuit and Zoom.

The key catalysts for Wednesday include the July PCE and core PCE, July personal income and spending, the second-quarter GDP second estimate, July durable orders, and earnings from Nvidia, Salesforce, Williams-Sonoma, CrowdStrike, Synopsys, Agilent, HP and Okta.

The Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole symposium kicks off Thursday, with a speech from Chair Kevin Warsh slated for Friday, which is the week's most consequential policy signal after last week's yield spike.

Key technical levels to watch

  • S&P 500 futures: 7,666 acted as support Friday; a break below Friday's low opens room toward the 7,600 handle.
  • Nasdaq 100: watch the 200-hour moving average; a firm rejection would confirm the AI-trade wobble flagged by Asia's Kospi and Samsung drop.
  • US 10-year yield: 4.71% is the pivot — sustained trade above threatens to re-test last week's cycle highs, pressuring duration-sensitive equities.
  • WTI crude: futures topped $87 a barrel last week to hit the highest level in a month, but the price has run into an intermediate-term downtrend line that may offer some resistance .
  • Gold: December contract holds a bid after hitting $4,624.10 per ounce, its highest since May 14, and recording a fifth straight weekly gain, its longest winning streak since October 2025.
  • Bitcoin: $77,000 is near-term support after a weekly gain of more than 20%, following a spate of positive developments for the world's largest cryptocurrency .
