Semiconductor Super Week: Samsung's Record Print and SK Hynix's $29B Debut Are the AI Trade's Korean Stress Test

The AI trade's next verdict comes from Seoul this week, as Samsung releases record earnings and SK Hynix makes a massive $29B Nasdaq debut, testing the durability of the memory super-cycle powering the AI complex.

The AI trade's next verdict won't come from Silicon Valley, it comes from Seoul.

Samsung Electronics releases preliminary second-quarter earnings Tuesday, July 7, and SK Hynix lists American depositary receipts on the Nasdaq under ticker SKHY on Friday, July 10.

Together the two account for more than half of the Kospi's market capitalization, and after last week's violence in chip stocks, this "semiconductor super week" is a live stress test for the memory supercycle that has been powering Nasdaq's AI complex.

Last Week's Warning Shot

The setup matters because sentiment has been showing signs of cracking. The Kospi swung between a 7.89% intraday plunge and a 5.76% surge last week, falling as low as the 7,370 area before closing at 8,088.

Thursday alone saw Samsung drop 9.06% and SK Hynix 14.57%, while in the U.S., the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 6.27% and 5.45% on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

The downside triggers were a report that Meta may lease its in-house AI infrastructure to outsiders, read by some as Big Tech monetizing existing capacity rather than building new data centers, and Apple's memory-cost-driven price hikes.

The rebound came just as fast on reports that Anthropic is in talks with Samsung's foundry for custom AI chips, sending Samsung up 8.22% and SK Hynix up 10.88% in a session.

Monday, the Kospi reclaimed 8,300, up 2.79% intraday before finishing the day down 0.46%. Samsung adding around 2.75% ahead of the earnings print, though foreign investors have now net-sold for 12 straight sessions.

Tuesday: The Highest Earnings Bar Ever Set

Consensus per LSEG SmartEstimates puts Samsung's Q2 operating profit around 86 trillion won ($56 billion) on revenue near 169.4 trillion won. an 18-fold jump from a year earlier and a record for any tech company globally, exceeding Apple and Nvidia's comparable quarters.

Meritz Securities has gone further, lifting its estimate to 90.1 trillion won and its target price to 500,000 won. The driver is memory pricing: DRAM contract prices rose roughly 44% quarter-on-quarter and NAND about 53%, with Samsung reportedly pushing a further 20% DRAM increase for Q3.

Micron already confirmed the cycle's strength with a 15.4-fold jump in quarterly operating profit.

Highlighting the explosive growth driven by the current market, Kim Yong-kwan, head of Samsung's Device Solutions Division, stated that the company expects to generate more profit this year than it has over its entire 40-year history in the semiconductor sector combined.

Friday: SK Hynix (SKHY) Hits the Nasdaq

SK Hynix's ADR sale, 17.79 million shares targeting roughly $29 billion is the second-largest U.S. market debut ever, behind only SpaceX's $85.7 billion IPO last month.

Bookbuilding opened Monday, with pricing set for Thursday based on Seoul's closing price, and each ADS expected to be priced near $166.

The bull case is a Micron-style re-rating: SK Hynix trades near 7x forward earnings versus Micron's 8–10x, a gap many attribute purely to U.S. listing access, with passive-fund inflows as a kicker.

The bear case is cycle-peak theory, raising capital for supply expansion (a separate $64 billion plant investment was just announced) at what may be the top of the memory cycle.

What Can Traders Expect

The memory supercycle has been the quiet engine under the AI trade, and this week it reports for inspection. A record Samsung print is already priced; what isn't priced is the HBM detail, the Q3 pricing signal, and whether $29 billion of fresh SKHY paper gets absorbed at the top of the cycle.

Possible Scenario Matrix

NQ traders should treat Tuesday's Asian session as the week's first genuine information event, before the FOMC minutes even arrive.
