Nvidia reports second-quarter results after the U.S. close on Wednesday, the same day as the July PCE inflation and the revised Q2 GDP reports, and two days before new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s first Jackson Hole keynote.
For the Nasdaq, this is not a single-stock event. At roughly $5 trillion, Nvidia is one of the two or three heaviest weights in the Nasdaq 100, so its after-hours move mechanically drags NQ futures with it.
The report is, in effect, a scheduled repricing of the whole index landing in the tightest macro window of the month.
The Numbers Barely Clear Nvidia’s Own Guide
Here is the tension: consensus sits almost exactly on top of the company’s guidance, so there is little room for a blow-out.
An Overview of the Numbers
| Metric | Consensus | NVDA Guide | 1 Year Ago |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $92.0B | $91.0B ±2% | $46.7B |
| Adj. EPS | $2.09 | - | $1.04 |
| Data-Centre Revenue | $85.5B | - | $41B |
| Gross Margin | mid-70s % | 75% | 75% |
Worse for the bulls, the buy-side bar is higher than the printed number.
Jefferies pegs the real target near $95 billion in revenue, with next-quarter guidance possibly reaching $108 billion. Simply hitting consensus could read as a miss.
Why a beat may not be enough
Nvidia has topped its own guidance for 13 straight quarters but the size of those beats keeps shrinking, from about 23% two years ago to under 5% last quarter.
When the “easy” comparison is data-centre revenue up more than 90%, the surprise that actually moves the stock gets harder to find each time.
What Actually Decides the Reaction
Because Q2 is largely priced, the market will trade the Q3 guide and the tone, not the headline. Three things matter most:
▪ Data centre & hyperscalers: the key line. Any hint that Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet or Meta are easing capex could become the story of the quarter.
▪ Blackwell to Vera Rubin: the next chip is due to start shipping in Q3; investors want the ramp on schedule with demand intact.
▪ Margins & China: can gross margin hold in the mid-70s despite rising memory and wafer costs? Guidance assumes zero Chinese data-centre revenue, so any approved sales are clean upside.
The Nasdaq Mechanism
The reaction pattern cuts against the obvious trade. Despite serial beats, Nvidia has fallen after five of its last six reports, and the day after earnings for four straight quarters.
A headline beat has not been a clean long signal, the index keeps fading good Nvidia numbers. The event cluster amplifies it: a strong guide can be neutralised by a hot PCE that revives September rate-hike bets. And because the data-centre line is the read-through for the entire AI-infrastructure trade, a disappointment will not stay contained, it hits the chip group and the mega-caps that dominate the Nasdaq.
The Levels: NQ and the Stock
NQ trades around the desk’s recurring 29,264.75 pivot, with the 29,200 floor beneath it and a stacked moving-average wall at 29,468–29,510 as the bias-decider.
Bias stays capped while 29,369 holds; only a reclaim there, then the 200-SMA at 29,680, would neutralise the downtrend. Losing 29,100 reopens the 28,900 low. A tight, catalyst-driven coil into Nvidia and Wednesday's PCE.

Nvidia itself leans on $214–$217 support; below that sit the 200-day near $195 and the June–July lows around $190. Resistance runs $227.92, then $232.28 and the $236.54 record.
Scenarios: Keyed to Wednesday’s Print and PCE
| Bull | Beat-and-raise plus a soft PCE print. Nvidia reclaims $230–$235, chips follow, and NQ presses the 29,468–29,510 moving-average wall toward recent highs. |
|---|---|
| Base | In-line or a modest beat with a cautious Q3 guide or a hot PCE. Nvidia fades into $195–$214 and NQ slips back to the 29,264.75 pivot / 29,200 floor. |
| Bear | A data-centre miss or any sign hyperscalers are easing off. The whole AI-infrastructure trade de-rates, NQ breaks 29,200 and leads the tape lower. |
From a Trading Perspective
The trap this quarter is behavioural: chasing the after-hours spike on a beat, or shorting into a guide that ultimately raises. History says the index fades the obvious reaction, so the edge is waiting for the guide and the PCE print to settle before committing, not trading the headline tick.
