Nasdaq Presses Below the Session VWAP after the Open: Can the Bears Sustain the Move?

Table of contents

Nasdaq (NQ) walked into the U.S. open as the one green light on the board. Nasdaq 100 futures were holding a small gain while S&P 500 and Dow futures sat in the red.

Chip names were doing the heavy lifting (the semiconductor ETF was up around 1.7%). But the tape is far from a clean breakout: after a wild pre-market that ran up near 29,760 and then flushed toward 29,480, price has broken below its session VWAP around 29,574 to trade down at 29,500.

That one line is the whole story for the next few hours.

The Big Picture (H4): Back on the Front Foot

Step back to the 4-hour chart and the trend has quietly turned constructive.

Price has climbed back above both its 100- and 200-period averages (roughly 29,477 and 29,277) and, importantly, back above the 29,291 shelf that has acted as the line in the sand for weeks, the same pivot the desk has flagged near 29,265.

Momentum agrees: the RSI sits around 55, on the bullish side of the mid-line. The bigger frame is a wide range between the 29,000 floor and the late-August highs up near 30,300, and NQ is now working the upper half of it.

Bottom line: as long as NQ holds above ~29,291, the H4 bias leans higher and dips appear to be for buying, not fading.

Zooming In (H1): An Uptrend Taking a Breather

The 1-hour chart shows why. Since the 3–4 September low, NQ has built a clean uptrend, and price now sits above a 100/200-average band that has flattened and started to curl up around 29,428–29,443, that band is the first dynamic support.

The recent push stalled near 29,750 and pulled back, but the dip has so far held around the 29,500 area, which is exactly what a healthy uptrend does.

The one caution flag is momentum: the H1 RSI has cooled back to roughly 49.5 (dead neutral), so the rally needs fresh buyers to re-engage rather than assume continuation.

Support steps down at 29,500, then the 29,428–29,443 band, then 29,291.

The Open (M15) and the Session VWAP

Now the trigger timeframe.

The session VWAP is simply the average price since the U.S. session began, weighted by volume, the benchmark big desks treat as “fair value” for the day.

Trade above it and buyers may own the session and dips get bought; trade below it and sellers may have the edge and rallies get sold.

Right now NQ is trading about 180 points below the VWAP at ~29,574, with the 15-minute 100- and 200-averages stacked at ~29,599 and ~29,605. Price is sitting a hair underneath, momentum flat (RSI ~43.8).

This is a coin has broken lower but can bears sustain the move?

Trader Positioning Data

Positioning Edge data now flags an extreme bearish divergence in NQ and it has widened as the session has worn on.

By 4:05 PM the profitable cohort was just 39% long, versus 70% long for the unprofitable crowd, a 31-point gap, up from about 19 points this morning. The winning side is short from an average entry near 29,525.8 while the losing crowd is long from an average 29,466.2. And so far they have been proven right: NQ has since slipped to 29,496, down 0.43% on the day, so the smart-money shorts are in the money while the crowd kept adding longs into the fall.

The read is unchanged but louder, do not chase longs while the profitable cohort is leaning this short; demand a clean VWAP reclaim before trusting any bounce, and give the short side (the one the data now backs) more respect than the tape’s earlier balance suggested.
