Back Below the Averages: Can the S&P Futures Defend 7,643 and Keep the Path to 8,000 Open?

Table of contents

E-mini S&P 500 futures are trading around 7,686 late Monday, lower on the day after the S&P 500 cash index slipped about 0.4%.

The pullback followed weekend news that the US and Iran traded fire for the first time in a month. But zoom out and the picture is less grim than the red screen suggests: the S&P is still on track to finish August up roughly 2%, and both the S&P and the Dow printed record highs earlier in the month.

In short, this is a pullback inside a strong month, not a breakdown.

What is Pressing on Stocks

Three macro threads are weighing on the tape.

First, the US strike near the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil up more than 2% (WTI above $85, Brent above $90), and higher oil feeds straight back into inflation worries.

Second, those worries lifted longer-dated Treasury yields, and rising long-end yields make stocks look less attractive by comparison, a familiar drag all through August.

Third, Friday’s hawkish message from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who said inflation’s underlying trend has not meaningfully improved and still hangs over the market.

The bigger test comes Friday with the August jobs report; manufacturing and services surveys are due earlier in the week, and G20 finance ministers are meeting.

For the next day or two, expect ES to trade off oil, yields, and position-squaring ahead of that jobs report.

What the Charts Say (H4 and H1)

S&P 500 (ES) Four-Hour Chart, August 31, 2026

On the 4-hour chart, the bigger uptrend that carried ES up from about 7,320 in late July is still intact. Price sits below its 100-period average (~7,738), which now caps the upside, but it is holding above its 200-period average (~7,643) and that 7,643 line is the one that matters.

Hold it, and this is just a breather inside the larger climb; the August high near 7,817 and the round-number 8,000 remain the markers above.

S&P 500 (ES) One-Hour Chart, August 31, 2026

On the 1-hour chart, the short-term trend has turned down: ES is below both its 100- and 200-period averages, which have bunched around 7,704–7,711 to form the first ceiling.

The one encouraging sign for buyers is a fresh bullish RSI divergence at today’s lows — a tentative signal that selling may be losing steam. But until ES reclaims 7,704–7,711, the near-term bias stays defensive.

The Next 24-48 Hours

The near-term driver is the mix of oil, long-end yields, and month-end flows, with traders reluctant to commit hard in either direction before Friday’s payrolls. That argues for a choppy, headline-sensitive tape that respects the levels until the data forces a decision.

Potential Scenarios

ScenarioWhat sets it off (next 24–48 hours)The path
BullOil and yields ease, or the bullish RSI signal plays out; ES reclaims 7,704–7,711 and then the 7,738 wall.Opens 7,760–7,770, then 7,817 and the path back toward 8,000 reopens.
BaseMost likely: choppy range between ~7,660 and 7,704–7,738 as traders de-risk into Friday’s jobs report. Month-end flows and Iran/oil headlines add noise. No clean trend until the data; range-trade the edges.
BearIran/oil escalates or long-end yields spike again; ES loses 7,660, then the 7,643 floor.Deeper pullback toward 7,560, then 7,520 and the August uptrend comes into question.

For the Traders

The bullish momentum signal is a heads-up, not a green light with price still under every key average, the higher-quality play is to let the 7,704–7,738 band prove itself: a clean reclaim confirms the bounce, a rejection keeps the pullback alive.

Friday’s jobs report gates the week, the next 24–48 hours favour trading the range and staying patient over chasing a breakout in either direction.
