US equity futures pointed to a firmer open Friday, with technology contracts leading a tentative rebound after Thursday's rate-driven selloff, even as elevated Treasury yields and firm crude prices kept a lid on risk appetite.
Nasdaq-100 futures lead at +0.65%, ahead of the S&P 500 and Dow in early premarket dealings. The bounce follows a bruising Thursday session in which the S&P 500 fell 0.87%, while the Dow and the Nasdaq 100 fell 1% or more, wiping out the mid-week rally sparked by the Treasury Department's expanded bond buyback plan. Walmart (WMT) earnings did not appease Street, triggering a sell-off in the shares of the world's biggest retailer and its peers.
The long end of the curve remains the key overhang. The 30-year yield climbed six basis points to close the session at 5.25%, recouping most of the decline sparked by the Treasury's surprise decision to increase buybacks of long-dated bonds. The 10-year yield erased its losses to close at 4.70%. A fresh Reuters analysis says the Treasury's buybacks may shift the fiscal adjustment into a weaker dollar if officials keep leaning against market-clearing yields.

NQ positioning points to a pronounced bearish divergence, according to MarketFramework's Positioning Edge tool, with just 13.6% of winning trades held long versus 51.2% of losing trades. The 37.6-point gap suggests profitable traders are heavily favoring the short side, while long-biased traders have struggled, reinforcing a bearish positioning signal.
US Stocks in Focus
Retail remain in play after Thursday's tape. Walmart sank 8%, the sharpest single-session decline in four years, after its second-quarter sales fell short of expectations.
That said, off-price apparel and home fashion stores Ross Stores (ROST) reported strong quarterly results Thursday after the close, with the stock surging nearly 9% in Friday's premarket.
Michael Saylor's Strategy, Inc. (MSTR) stock is poised to extend gains, rising nearly 10% in premarket as Bitcoin (BTC) continued to head northward. Cryptocurrency exchange operators Coinbase (COIN) also advanced strongly.
BJ's Wholesale (BJS) and Buckle (BKE) are in the spotlight ahead of their earnings report due before the market open.
Asian Markets: Mixed Finish as Bond Nerves Linger
Asian equities remained volatile on Friday after major U.S. stock indexes fell sharply as a brief reprieve in the bond market abruptly reversed. In Tokyo, the Japanese Nikkei 225 average languished mostly in negative terrain, before closing down 0.30% at 66,016.36. The yen's strength also weighed down on the index, heavily weighted with export stocks. On the other hand, Greater China outperformed: Hong Kong took the day, closing up 1.21% while Shanghai finished flat, a gap that keeps rewarding investors who own China exposure through HK-listed names rather than the mainland tape.
Australia lagged, with the ASX 200 down about one-third of a percent, close to its session low, and the All Ordinaries' 0.31% fall continuing to exceed the ASX 200 decline. However, South Korea's Kospi and the Taiwanese TAIEX ended higher for the session.
European Early Trend
European equities also showed a lack of direction, trading mixed by late morning trading. This follows a down session on Thursday, when European stocks closed slightly lower amid sharp losses for high-end retailers and lingering macroeconomic headwinds.
Commodities and FX
Crude prices remain the second key macro pressure point alongside rates. Borrowing costs were lifted by higher fuel and gas prices after President Donald Trump stated the U.S. entered "economic war" against Iran, prolonging blockades of tankers crossing the Persian Gulf. Bitcoin extended its four-day rally. On Thursday, the apex crypto jumped 5.4% to $73,011.87 its sharpest single-day gain in weeks, moving higher from a prior close near $69,270.
Key Technical Levels
Traders are watching a tight band of support and rate triggers into the cash open. Friday's key test is whether the market can hold the SPY/QQQ/IWM support band into the New York open, because a failure there with the 10Y yield still near 4.70% would keep the bearish, rates-led tone in control. On the long end, a 30-year move through 5.30% or a deeper dollar slide would signal that Treasury's buyback response is still failing to restore confidence.
