Silver's Deficit Floor Meets Its Fed Lever: Why Wednesday's Asymmetry Favors the Bulls

Table of contents

Silver entered Fed week trading above $60/oz, before pulling back to trade at $59/oz after the U.S. open, with the gold-silver ratio compressed to roughly 68.6.

The setup into Wednesday’s FOMC is not symmetric and seeing why means separating the two engines that drive the metal from the structural floor that sits beneath both.

Two engines, one floor

The monetary engine is well understood: when rate-hike expectations fall, silver historically moves two to three times the percentage of gold. The industrial engine is the part macro traders underweight — roughly 58% of annual silver demand comes from manufacturing: solar panels, EVs and AI data-center infrastructure.

Beneath both sits a structural floor. 2026 marks the sixth consecutive annual supply deficit, with demand projected to outpace supply by 46.3 million ounces (data from the Silver Institute). That deficit does not respond to a 25bp move in the funds rate. What it does is amplify the upside when monetary conditions improve.

Why the risk/reward skews

Markets have all but priced a hold at 3.50–3.75%, with only ~34% odds of a July hike and ~78% by September.

A hawkish hold — the base case — is already in the tape.

For silver to break lower, Wednesday would need a genuine hike or an aggressively hawkish press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, and even then the deficit floor buffers the physical bid.

The upside surprise — any softening in tone, any nod that the oil-driven inflation impulse is fading — hits the monetary lever at a 2–3x beta to gold.

The downside is buffered by a structural floor; the upside is levered to a dovish repricing. That is a positively skewed setup.

The 2026 context

This asymmetry doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Silver surged 135% in 2025 before a brutal reset — silver futures suffered their biggest single-day drop since the 1980s at the end of January, and the metal is still down roughly 12% YTD That washout matters: speculative positioning is nowhere near the crowded extremes that precede violent unwinds, leaving room for the physical deficit to reassert.

The recent tape confirms the turn — silver climbed ~2% into Friday even as the dollar firmed, then extended Monday as DXY softened on the oil-driven U.S.-Iran de-escalation.

What Are the Charts Saying

Silver futures are consolidating around 58.90, pinned between a flattening 100-MA (59.17) overhead and a rising 200-MA (58.13) below. The averages have compressed to roughly a point apart, reflecting indecision after last week's rejection from the 61.20 swing high.

Price faded from the 60.00 handle earlier today, and RSI at 43.6 sits below the midline, hinting at mild bearish momentum near term.

A close back above the 100-MA reopens 60.00 and then 61.20. Failure to hold the 200-MA at 58.13 exposes 58.00, with deeper support at the 57.50 shelf. Bias is neutral-to-slightly-soft while price trades beneath the 100-SMA; the compressed averages warn a directional break is building.

Retail trader positioning data based on the Positioning Edge Tool on the MarketFramework website is showing low volume for silver. this is surprising givgen the potential setups which could materialize.

This could be a case of traders waiting for the precious metal to bottom given the nature of price action over the last 6 weeks.
