The Reversal

The Nasdaq's soft-NFP relief rally lasted about an hour. After opening higher when June payrolls came in at just 57,000 against expectations of 115,000, easing pressure on the Fed to hike, the Nasdaq Composite Index has erased its early-session gains and now trades more than 2.3% lower on the day.

The Session at a Glance

MarketSession MoveDriver
Nasdaq 100Early gains erased, down 2.3%Second day of semiconductor liquidation
Dow Jones+300 pts, record intraday highRotation into value/cyclicals post-NFP
Tesla (TSLA)-6% + To below $400Sell-the-news on record Q2 deliveries
SMH (semis ETF)-3%Teradyne, KLA-8%: Micron -3.4%: Nvidia -1.2%
SpaceX (SPCX)-7%Post-IPO volatility into July 7 NQ inclusion

The reversal is striking against the rest of the tape: the Dow futures surged more than 300 points to a fresh all-time intraday high above 53,140, while the S&P 500 hovers near the flatline. This is not a risk-off day; it is a rotation day, and the Nasdaq is on the wrong side of it.

The pressure point remains the same one that has defined the start of July: semiconductors. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) dropped 3% as chips fell for a second straight session, led by 8% declines in Teradyne and KLA, with Nvidia down 1.2% and Micron losing a further 3.4% after Wednesday's 10%-plus collapse.

The overnight session showed how global the unwind has become: South Korea's Kospi cratered 7.9% to its lowest close since June 8, with Samsung down 9% and SK Hynix plunging almost 15%.

Tesla: A Record Quarter, Sold

The day's most dramatic single-stock story is Tesla. The EV maker delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2, blowing past the Tesla-compiled analyst consensus of 406,024 — a beat of roughly 74,000 units.

The print marks a 25% increase on the roughly 384,000 vehicles delivered a year earlier and a 34% jump from Q1's 358,023, with the Model 3 and Model Y accounting for 467,762 units, or 97% of deliveries.

The energy business beat too: 13.5 GWh of storage deployed against expectations of 13.3 GWh, up from 9.6 GWh a year ago.

Shares initially rose about 1% in the premarket on the news. They are now down more than 6%, trading below $400.

Three factors explain the reversal.

First, positioning: Tesla shares had surged into the print — including an 8% jump on Monday to reclaim $400 — as improving European registration data leaked out, meaning a beat was largely pre-bought.

Second, the composition of the beat: Tesla produced 451,758 vehicles against 480,126 delivered, a roughly 28,000-unit gap. That partly cleared the 50,000-plus vehicle inventory overhang left by Q1, when production far outran deliveries as US demand cooled after the federal EV tax credit expired. So, a slice of the record was inventory clearance rather than fresh production-matched demand.

Third, the tape itself: on a day when the market is liquidating its highest-momentum growth names, a stock that has already front-run its own catalyst is exactly the profile getting sold.

The bigger strategic picture stays in focus into earnings on July 22. Tesla is recovering from consecutive annual sales declines, and the company has said it is optimizing its lineup around a fully autonomous future. It stopped producing the flagship Model S and X in January to convert their Fremont lines to Optimus production, and expects volume production of both the Cybercab and the Tesla Semi this year.

One disclosure gap worth noting for the energy segment: SpaceX, which owns xAI, bought $269 million of Tesla Megapacks in April for its Memphis data centers, and Tesla's deliveries report did not disclose how much related-party transactions contributed to the 13.5 GWh deployment figure.

The Technical Picture

Nasdaq Futures (NQ) Four-Hour Chart, July 2, 2026

NQ1!_2026-07-02_19-25-31

Source: TradingView

Price action has decisively broken below both the 100 MA ($30,007.00) and 200 MA ($29,923.43).

This dual breakdown via a large, expansionary red candlestick indicates intense selling pressure and a bearish regime shift.

However bulls remain in play until the swing low at 29,283 is broken.

The broken MAs will now pivot into formidable overhead resistance on any attempted rally.

Retail Trader Sentiment

According to the marketframework validator tool, retail trader positioning shows a telling divergence. Profitable traders are leaning mildly short, positioned 43% long versus 57% short.

Unprofitable traders, meanwhile, are moderately crowded on the long side at 65% long versus 35% short.

Read through a contrarian lens, winners fading the rally while losers chase it adds a cautionary undertone for NQ bulls at current levels, worth monitoring alongside price action into the next key data catalyst.
