The August personal consumption expenditure (PCE) inflation data released Wednesday was qualified as mixed, with revisions lowering the trend but with no improvement from July to August. On the face of it, the PCE numbers were tamer than expected across the board, giving Nasdaq bulls some relief on the rate front just as Micron earnings approaches as the next major test for the artificial intelligence (AI) trade.
The Nasdaq E-mini futures (NQ), which languished in the red ahead of the PCE data, reversed higher, gaining more than 0.80%. The move carried NQ through the psychological resistance of 30,800, and to an intraday high of 30,895, putting the contract within striking distance of 31K mark.
PCE Offers Nasdaq Bulls Some Rate Relief
The PCE report provided some encouragement for markets concerned about the inflation outlook. While the data did not point to a meaningful cooling in the month-to-month inflation trend, the softer-than-expected readings offered some relief that price pressures may not be accelerating as rapidly as feared.
For technology stocks and the Nasdaq in particular, the distinction matters because higher inflation can keep interest rates elevated for longer, putting pressure on the valuation of growth and AI-related companies.
The immediate reaction in NQ suggested that traders focused more heavily on the softer-than-expected inflation readings than on the stickier elements of the report.
ADP Keeps the Labor-Market Question Alive
The inflation relief was accompanied by a stronger-than-expected private payrolls reading. ADP reported a gain of 90,000 private-sector jobs in September, above the 73,000 increase economists had expected.
That creates a more complicated macro backdrop for the Nasdaq.
Softer inflation reduces some of the pressure on the Fed to maintain a restrictive stance, while resilient hiring suggests the economy has not weakened enough to eliminate concerns about underlying demand. The combination could keep Treasury yields and expectations for the Fed's next moves central to the direction of equity futures.
For NQ, the key question is therefore whether the PCE data can provide lasting relief on the rate side without a renewed rise in yields following the stronger labor-market signal.
NQ Pushes Through 30,800 as 31K Comes Into View
The price action provides a more immediate test. A sustained move above 30,800 would strengthen the case that the latest rebound is more than an intraday reaction to the inflation data. The 31,000 level, however, could represent a more significant test because it combines a major psychological threshold with the potential for traders who missed the initial move to reassess whether to chase the rally.
The reaction around 31,000 could therefore be more informative than the initial break above 30,800.
Micron Earnings Become the Next AI Trade Test
That is where Micron's Q4 earnings enter the picture.
With NQ already pressing toward 31K, Micron's results after the close could determine whether semiconductor strength broadens or whether traders use the earnings event to lock in gains.
The market will likely focus not only on the headline results but also on the company's outlook for memory demand, pricing and AI-related demand. Micron sits at an important point in the AI hardware chain, making its commentary relevant beyond MU shares themselves.
A strong earnings reaction could reinforce the narrative that AI infrastructure spending remains capable of supporting semiconductor demand and technology valuations. Conversely, cautious guidance or signs of moderation in AI-related demand could put pressure on the broader Nasdaq even if the headline numbers beat expectations.
Can MU Provide the Catalyst for a 31K Break?
The timing is particularly important because NQ has already done much of the initial work. The PCE release helped push futures above 30,800, but a sustained move through 31,000 would require buyers to absorb the supply that can emerge around a major psychological level. Micron could provide that catalyst if its results and outlook strengthen confidence in the AI earnings cycle.
The opposite scenario would also be important. If MU fails to meet elevated expectations, NQ could retreat toward the recently broken 30,800 level, turning that former resistance into an important near-term support test.
In other words, the market may have already priced in some of the PCE relief. Micron's guidance could determine whether the next leg comes from a fresh AI earnings catalyst or whether NQ consolidates below 31K.
Technical Picture: NQ Momentum Builds
The 15-minute chart shows a constructive short-term setup, with NQ trading above the 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-period SMAs and above the session VWAP at 30,752.70. The contract is also holding above the VWAP upper band near 30,843.59, reinforcing the post-PCE momentum.

The RSI at 68.70 is approaching overbought territory, suggesting upside momentum remains strong but is becoming stretched. A sustained break above 30,900–30,920 would bring 31,000 into focus, while a retreat below 30,800 would weaken the breakout and put 30,750–30,670 on watch as the next support zone.
MarketFramework’s Positioning Edge tool offers a more cautious counterpoint to NQ’s bullish technical picture, showing an 11-point divergence between profitable and unprofitable traders. Overall positioning is neutral, although it is edging toward bearishness.
Successful traders are 36.9% long, versus 48.4% long among unprofitable traders, indicating that the more successful cohort is considerably less willing to chase the recent rally. This divergence suggests that the technical breakout has yet to be confirmed by positioning and that experienced traders may be more cautious as NQ approaches the 31,000 threshold.
The entry levels add another layer to the setup. Profitable traders' average short entry is around 30,896, almost exactly at NQ's recent intraday high, while unprofitable traders' average long entry is near 30,830, below the current price. The market is effectively approaching the profitable traders' short-entry zone while sitting above the average entry of the less-successful long cohort.
This creates a key positioning test around 30,896–31,000. A sustained move above that area could force shorts to reassess their positions and potentially add fuel to the breakout. Conversely, failure to clear the zone could reinforce the divergence, particularly if NQ slips back below 30,830, where the unprofitable long cohort's average entry sits.
Scenario Analysis for NQ
| Scenario | NQ Reaction |
|---|---|
| MU beats, issues strong guidance | Break above 31K |
| MU beats, issues cautious guidance | Tests 31K but struggles |
| MU misses | Retreat toward 30,800 |
For now, NQ's move above 30,800 puts 31,000 within reach. The PCE report supplied the initial push, ADP complicated the rate outlook, and Micron's Q4 results could determine whether Nasdaq futures can turn that push into a more durable breakout.
